Dean Ornish is an American physician and researcher. He founded and leads the non-profit Preventive Medicine Research Institute in Sausalito, California, and is a clinical professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco.
In the Lifestyle Heart Trial (The Lancet, 1990), a small group of heart patients followed an intensive programme: a plant-based low-fat diet, exercise, stress management and group support. In most, less narrowing of the coronary arteries was measured after a year.
Since 2010 the Ornish programme has been covered by Medicare in the US as intensive cardiac rehabilitation.
He later studied the same approach in prostate cancer and, in a small randomised trial (2024), in people with early Alzheimer’s disease.
His books include Dr. Dean Ornish’s Program for Reversing Heart Disease, Eat More, Weigh Less, The Spectrum and UnDo It! (2019).
For longevity, his work shows that combining lifestyle factors can have measurable effects, although the studies are often small.
Takeaway: don’t change just one thing; combine diet, movement, relaxation and social support.
