In the evening a person writes a short list in a notebook by the bed, a brain dump before bed, phone put away

Evening brain dump: put worrying on paper before you sleep

TLDR

My head loves late to-do lists: emails, groceries, that one conversation. In bed they become a loop. What helps (for me): not “solving,” just parking. Notebook, lamp low, three to ten lines. Done. Phone stays away — otherwise the dump becomes a scroll.

What a brain dump actually is

It is a short external list of open loops: tasks, worries, “don’t forget.” Goal is to unload working memory so you stop repeating. It is not a journaling marathon and not a replacement for therapy in severe anxiety or depression. Just: paper as a buffer between day and sleep.

How I do it

  • Yes: 5–10 minutes, bullet points, dim lamp, phone in another room or face-down far away.
  • Yes: close with “look tomorrow” — not solving at night.
  • Not: keep typing in Notes until you land in feeds (see screen time and sleep).
  • Not: chase a score in a sleep app — that can feed orthosomnia.

Sleep context stays broader

A dump does not fix a chaotic sleep rhythm. Fixed bed and wake times weigh more — on that in sleep consistency beats duration. And if your stomach is still full from a late heavy meal, the body ruminates with you: see evening meals and sleep.

What may go on the paper

Tasks (“email X”), worries in one sentence (“conversation Y tomorrow”), and reminders (“check passport”). No essay. If an item is too big, I only write the next microscopic step. That stops the dump from becoming a second workday at 10:40 pm.

Sometimes a fixed line at the bottom helps: “This stays here until tomorrow.” Sounds soft, works as an anchor. Combine with dim light and no last “just check Slack.” The dump is the end piece of the day, not the start of a digital nap.

Who finds that ruminating structurally sabotages sleep despite dump, light and fixed times deserves more than a notebook: talk to a doctor or sleep/mental-health professional. Engy stays literacy, not a treatment plan.

I keep the dump deliberately analogue: paper does not dissolve into notifications. Digital notes may be a daytime backup, but in the evening the pen wins because there is no browser tab next to it. Small friction is a feature here.

Practical Engy tip

Lay notebook + pen ready before you brush your teeth. Dump → lamp off → bed. No second round of “just check quickly.” Three evenings is enough to feel whether you settle faster.

Recommendations

  • Short, on paper, before screen-cutoff ends.
  • Parking ≠ therapy; persistent insomnia/anxiety: professional help.
  • Sleep-time consistency > perfect dump text.
