Weekend long walk: my aerobic block without stopwatch stress
Informational, not medical advice.
TLDR
- A long weekend walk (about 60–120 minutes at a talkable pace) counts for me as a real aerobic block — on top of shorter weekday steps.
- WHO guidelines aim for enough moderate activity per week; one longer session helps the total without every day needing to be “perfect”.
- I pick route, shoes and weather plan ahead; otherwise it slides to Sunday evening.
- This does not replace strength training and is not a medical cure — it is a repeatable longevity habit.
On weekdays I get by with short chunks: errands, an evening loop after eating, sometimes the bike. On weekends I want something that feels like training without stopwatch stress. A long walk became that: zone-2-ish, socially possible, and sustainable in autumn.
What “long” means for me
I aim for 60 to 120 minutes at a pace where I can still talk. That sits close to what we call zone 2 on Engy: effort you could hold for hours. I use breathing and the talk test.
WHO recommends enough moderate-to-vigorous aerobic activity per week for adults, plus muscle strengthening. One long weekend walk is not a full week by itself — see also minimum training dose in busy weeks — but it lifts my total noticeably.
How I make it practical
- Friday evening: pick a route and check the weather.
- Broken-in shoes: no brand-new trail runners on day one.
- Water + a small snack if we head toward two hours.
- Company or a podcast: whatever lowers the barrier, not what distracts me from traffic.
- Afterwards: a short stretch or just sit with water.
Weekend versus weekday
The evening walk stays short and local. The weekend walk can go farther and longer. I mix them on purpose: short frequency on weekdays, one longer block on the weekend. If it pours, I shift to Sunday — not all-or-nothing.
Autumn details that matter
In October I wear layers I can unzip, not one heavy coat. Wet leaves mean shorter steps on slopes. I check the route once on a map app before leaving, not every five minutes on the way — otherwise it is not a walk, it is a screen session outdoors.
With company I agree a rough duration ahead (“about ninety minutes”). Solo walks are fine too: podcast optional, silence optional.
Limits
New joint pain, recent injury or medical advice to limit load: build up or ask. Longer is not always better.
