Rose Anne Kenny is an Irish physician-scientist and bestselling author specialising in medical gerontology. She is Regius Professor of Physic at Trinity College Dublin, the first woman in that role.
She directs the Falls and Syncope Unit at St James’s Hospital in Dublin and the Mercer’s Institute for Successful Ageing.
She is the founding principal investigator of TILDA (The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing), a large study following thousands of Irish people aged 50 and over for many years.
TILDA produced insights on falls and blood-pressure drops on standing, loneliness, vitamin D and the effect of how people think about ageing: a positive view of ageing was linked to better health.
In her book Age Proof (2022) she translates this research into daily life, from sleep and diet to friendship, laughter and purpose.
For longevity, her work shows that biological and social factors together shape how we age.
Takeaway: invest in social contact and a positive view of ageing; it counts alongside exercise and diet.
